Rhode Island: Vicious Dog Hearing Set For Pit Bull / Boxer mix owned by Kevin Wong on Monday In Barrington

RHODE ISLAND -- Barrington Police Animal Control Officer John Duffy will hold a vicious dog hearing on Monday, Oct. 31 at 8:45 a.m. for a pit bull / boxer mix that attacked a cockapoo in Barrington earlier this year.

Police have reportedly made numerous attempts to contact the dog’s owner, Kevin J. Wong, of 34 Whittaker St., in East Providence, but have not been able to track him down.

The hearing will be convened for the purpose of determining whether or not the dog in question, Paco, should be declared vicious.

In July, a woman was walking her cockapoo named Kristy near Vermont Avenue when Paco leaped out of a parked car and attacked her dog.

The woman, a Houghton Street resident, picked up her dog — a much smaller canine — in an effort to protect it from the hard-charging mix. The larger dog lunged after the cockapoo, latched onto its hind quarters and pulled it down to the ground, knocking the woman down in the process.

Some people who were nearby heard the commotion and helped the woman wrestle Kristy from the jaws of Paco.

The woman rushed her dog to an animal hospital in Swansea, but Kristy had to be euthanized later that day because of the severity of the injuries.

Mr. Wong was visiting someone in Roberta Plat; he left his dog inside his vehicle with the windows open.

The owner of the cockapoo went to the hospital to be treated for cuts and bruises incurred during the attack.

The panel for the hearing includes Barrington Police Chief John LaCross, RISPCA official Joseph Warzycha and EP Animal Control Officer William Muggle.

According to police, Paco has been kept at an East Providence animal shelter since the incident.
